Item Description
6-1/8x7-7/8" vintage glossy photo depicting former Major League Baseball Commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, seated in the stands and observing a ball game while smoking a stogie. Photographer's stamp on back reads "Pacific & Atlantic Photos, Inc." along with an attached paper caption dates 8-21-23. Kenesaw Landis was the first Commissioner of Baseball, residing in office from 1920-44. Best known for his banning of eight Chicago Black Sox in 1920, following their gambling involvement during the 1919 World Series with the Cincinnati Reds. During his time in office, Landis was also very well known to be opposed to the potential integration of Major League Baseball as the black Negro Leagues were becoming more and more prominent throughout America. Kenesaw would be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1944. Image quality of the photo is excellent, back of photo exhibits remnants of paper residue at bottom. VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
