Item Description
4-7/8x7" vintage silver gelatin matte photo depicting a team composite of 17 balplayers along with three baseball bats and three baseballs. Photographer's credit in lower right reads "Espropidad de T. Chaoollan Foto". The 1939-40 Cordoba team was one of the top ball clubs in the Mexican League that season. All ballplayers are identified underneath their respective images, which is quite rare for a Mexican baseball item from this era. Highlighted ballplayer from this 1939-40 Cordoba team is long-time Latin baseball great, Lazaro Salazar, who won the Mexican League batting title during 1939-40 with an average of .374. Lazaro began his professional baseball career in 1924, playing in the U.S. Negro leagues for the Cuban Stars and would spend a total of seven seasons there. After that, Salazar spent stints in Cuba as well as Mexico, ultimately being selected to the Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954. Image quality of this composite is superb, approx.. 2.5" crease in lower right-hand corner, back exhbits scattered foxing. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
