Item Description
4.75x7-1/8" vintage glossy photo depicting all-time Cuban baseball great, Martin Dihigo, posing for a beautiful portrait photo. Photographer's stamp on back reads "Bohemia Departamento Fotografico" along w/the identified subject. Martin Dihigo began his professional baseball career playing for the storied Cuban baseball club during the winter league season of 1922-23, joining other all-time greats, John Henry "Pop" Lloyd, Cristobal Torriente and Dick "Cannonball" Redding on that powerhouse ball club. For the next decade, Martin would spend his summers playing in the US Negro Leagues, primarily for the Cuban Stars before joining the Hilldale team during the late 1920s and early 1930s. Meanwhile, Dihigo played most of his winter ball seasons in Cuba during that time period. During the 1930s, Dihigo would spend extensive time playing in the Dominican Republic and Venezuela before moving on to Mexico during the 1940s. Martin was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977. There are no significant condition issues to note, back of photo includes paper caption identifier in Spanish along with date stamp of Feb. 9, 1990 along w/publisher's notes, indicating that this popular 1940s image of Dihigo was reused as late as 1990.
