Item Description
1.5" celluloid on two layers of 1-7/8" fiberboard and cardboard. No maker's name. Front has photo of Lajoie. Back designed like a baseball w/celluloid wheels for runs "Visitors/Home Club" and innings. The Cleveland Leader was a highly regarded newspaper publisher of the day, with a strong emphasis on local sports, particularly baseball. Nap Lajoie was a Hall of Fame second baseman who began his professional baseball career back in 1896 with the National League's Philadelphia ball club as a second baseman and would remain with the team until 1902 when he moved on to the Cleveland Bronchos of the newly formed American League. Proving to be so popular with the local fan base, the Cleveland team would soon rename their club the "Naps" in Lajoie's honor, the following season. Lajoie would spend a total of 21 seasons playing in the Major Leagues, finishing with a career batting average of .338 along with 82 home runs, 1,599 RBI's, 1,504 runs scored and 380 stolen bases. Nap would ultimately gain election into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. Gold background has variation in luster brightness. Glossy, VF. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
