Item Description
1.25" w/W&H back paper. One of 10 different examples that we are offering this auction out of a total known of 12 different players (see following 9 lots). Design includes portrait photo at center (but players are not identified), below this is pennant w/skull and crossbones. All are from the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates team, which finished with one of the best records in National League history at 110-42, defeating the Detroit Tigers in the 1909 World Series, 4 games to 3. The Hermes Ice Cream Factory was located in downtown Pittsburgh, PA on the corners of Diamond & Shingiss Streets and was the leading producer of ice cream in the Western Pennsylvania area during the early part of the 20th century. Bill Abstein was the starting first baseman for the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates ball club, finishing the season with a .260 batting average to go along with one homer and 70 RBI's.
