Item Description
3-3/8"x5-3/8" vintage glossy postcard depicting 12 team members posed around a park bench. What makes this real photo postcard so special is the presence of an African American ballplayer pictured in the back row, standing on far right. During the first decade of the 20th century, it was very unusual to find a mixed team, including both white and African American ballplayers. Handwritten message on back identifies this club as being a semi-pro team from Blanchard, IA and we have no reason to believe otherwise. Image on front retains superb clarity with lt., even corner wear with a couple of lt. creases visible primarily in reflected light. Divided postcard back has been postally cancelled with a date of April 2, 1909. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA
