Item Description
3-3/8"x5-3/8" vintage silver gelatin postcard depicting six ballplayers posed on a ballfield along with numerous spectators in the background. Caption at bottom of postcard reads "Some Veteran's Getting In Shape @ Kelly's Field". All six subjects are numbered and identified by name accordingly. Each is wearing a different uniform, leading one to believe that this is not a team presented here but, instead, a gathering of local black players, possibly in a spring training type of setting as the postcard exhibits a cancellation date on back of March 20, 1911. One uniform pictured clearly identifies "Chattanooga" across the chest while another has a fancy "D" while a third has initials which are partially obscured. Most likely, these represent semi-pro teams from the area as we have been unable to match any of these uniforms with a known professional African American team of the era. Image retains excellent clarity, corners exhibit lt., even wear with some foxing/staining present on the divided back, which has been postally cancelled in Chatanooga, TN. Message on back appears that it may have been written by one of the ballplayers pictured on front or possibly a teammate of theirs. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
