Item Description
16-5/8x23-7/8"Bainbridge illustration board w/pen and ink original art by Chad Grothkopf (1914-2005) and Milt Neil (1914-1997), who adapted the Howdy Doody TV show into a newspaper comic between Oct. 15, 1950 and June 21, 1953, though Neil only worked on it for the first three months, after which Grothkopf took over. Art is from Nov. 26, 1950 Sunday page, making this an early example. Art features 11 panels (not counting large title stat paste-over) and features the Jungle Bowl football game between the North Animals and the South Animals. Howdy Doody talks w/coach in second panel and waterboy Dilly Dally is inserted into the game w/his large dinosaur friend Dreadnaught, winning the game. Howdy Doody appears in one panel while Dilly Dally appears in five panels. Board has even moderate aging w/heavy corner tip wear at lower left and .5x1" tears/dent along lower left margin and some scattered corner tip wear. Back of board has some inking and scattered surface paper lifts. Missing paste-over correction text strip in second to last panel, resulting in some staining. Art o/w remains clean and Fine overall.
