Item Description
1-1/8" tin litho. Topps' initial marketing materials promoted 90 different but actually produced only 60, sold with a piece of gum in a box picturing Ted Williams for 5¢. All images used for these buttons match the 1956 Topps baseball card series photos. There are a total of 12 Hall of Famers included in the set: Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Yogi Berra, Gil Hodges, Al Kaline, Ed Mathews, Willie Mays, Phil Rizzuto, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Warren Spahn and Ted Williams. Three rarities exist: Chuck Diering (bit off center but only the most trivial paint wear), Hector Lopez (same condition) and Chuck Stobbs (centered, tiny wear). Being lithos, few examples out there are truly NM/Mint, but Paul Muchinsky worked hard to build this high-grade set. Of the 60 buttons, Duke Snider grades Fine, while the other 59 are at least VF with many Exc. All w/nice gloss. The error button was a production misprint, stamped badly off-center w/Vic Power on top two thirds and hat of Jim Finigan on bottom one third (last button shown in our photo). An oddity to compliment this classic set. Paul Muchinsky Collection.
