Item Description
3-3/8x5-3/8" vintage silver gelatin postcard depicting a pair of teammates from the legendary 1923 United States "Tour of Japan" baseball club. Japanese writing is imprinted along the top front edge of the postcard with hand written identification on back reading "Al Sewell/Al DeVormer 1923 Tour". However, correct player identifications for the 1922-23 teammates pictured are Luke Sewell (C) and Fred Hofmann (C). Sewell was the starting catcher for the Cleveland Indians from 1921-32 followed by seasons with Washington, Chicago (AL) and St. Louis (AL). Hofmann was a back-up catcher for the New York Yankees from 1919-25 followed by two final seasons with the Boston Red Sox from 1927-28. This United States team was dubbed the "Herb Hunter All-Stars" in recognition of its organizer, Herb Hunter, who enjoyed a very brief Major League career from 1916-21. AZO stamp box on unused back dates the postcard to 1910-30, which is consistent with the subject matter presented. Lt. toning visible along the right vertical edge along with evidence of scrapbook removal around edges on back. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
