Item Description
Willard Mullin (1902-1978) was a sports cartoonist known for his creation of the Brooklyn Dodgers mascot the Brooklyn Bum. Working for the New York World-Telegram newspaper and The Sporting News, he won the National Cartoonist Society Reuben Award in 1954 and also won their Sports Cartoon Award every year 1957-1962 and again in 1964-1965. Offered here is 14.75x17.5" thick artboard w/pen and ink original art w/graphite shading/accents, showing group of seven gamblers pacing in a stable, w/word balloons having repeated use of the word "Worry." Race horse has "Pounditout" name written above it as horse tells men to leave so he can get some rest. Lower left has inked inscription w/personal note about not betting on horse racing. Artboard has some lt. even aging and edge wear as framed, but art remains clean and displays Exc. A newly discovered Mullin cartoon, and the first time it is being offered at auction.
