Item Description
15x19-7/8" poster printed by H.A. Thomas & Wylie Litho Co. of New York and featuring the art of The Yellow Kid by creator R.F. Outcault, showing the Kid as bandleader, leading a goat, parrot and a beautiful woman w/drum as drawn by Archie Gunn. Poster features eye-catching text that includes "New York Journal's Colored Supplement With 'McFadden's Flats' By Outcault - The Creator Of The 'Yellow Kid' - And Townsend - Author Of 'Chimmie Fadden'." Poster dates to 1896, shortly after Outcault was hired away from  Joseph Pulitzer's New York World to bring his Yellow Kid character to the pages of William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal American newspaper. Poster has slightly darker aging at margin edges and poster has vertical fold at center. Scattered margin wear w/masking/archival tape repairs to edge tears on back; most significant is a 2" tear at bottom, to left of "'Chimmie Fadden'" name and under Yellow Kid's feet. Top margin has moderate wrinkling. Fine overall, but would make for nice framed display. Rare. Ken Johnson Collection.
