Item Description
1.25". Whitehead & Hoag back paper. From a wonderfully designed Detroit team button set of 15 different showing Buster holding "Morton's" bakery flowing pennant that pictures a tiger while he points with opposite hand to the team member's portrait photo. Buster's usual canine sidekick Tige has been replaced with a grinning and winking tiger who holds a bat as he sits on his haunches and waves with one paw. This button series was undoubtedly issued to promote a local baker by capitalizing on the success of the three-time defending American League champion Detroit Tigers baseball club and their three Hall of Fame stars, Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford and Hughie Jennings.

Bill Donovan, nicknamed "Wild Bill" and "Smiling Bill", was an American right-handed baseball pitcher and manager. Donovan played Major League Baseball for the Washington Senators (1898), Brooklyn Superbas (1899-1902), and Detroit Tigers (1903-1912). In 1901, he led the National League with 25 wins. He later helped Detroit win three consecutive American League pennants from 1907 to 1909.

Foxing around circumference creeping into the field at outer edges w/scattered dots in cream background of portrait area most notably on just below "Morton's" flag. Spider web craze lines in cello. emanating from center between figures and portrait just extending into image when viewed at an angle in reflected light. Back paper w/moisture toning. VG. Despite these issues the button retains strong color, high gloss and still presents nicely with a bold and sharp photo. An impressive pin-back from one of the all-time most attractive baseball advertising button sets.
