Item Description
22x28" on cardboard. Promoting a "Big Rock & Roll Show" Fri. Oct. 14 at Memorial Auditorium featuring Buddy Johnson, Chuck Berry Trio, The Nutmegs, Arthur Prysock, 4 Fellows, Al Savage, The Spaniels, Ella Johnson and Queenie Owens. While several hitmakers adorn this poster it's Chuck Berry, a founding father of rock that really sets this off. A terrifically early Berry artifact, this is the only poster we're aware of utilizing the moniker "Chuck Berry Trio" which was quickly dropped in subsequent months. The song listed here "Maybellene" was Berry's first single on Chess records and had been released in July but was already a major hit selling a million copies by the end of 1955. Encouraged by Muddy Waters to meet w/Leonard Chess, Berry traveled to Chicago and Mr. Chess was smitten by Berry's take on a Bob Willis hillbilly country number "Ida Red". Berry explained that it was one of the most rousing numbers at integrated "salt and pepper clubs" and Chess agreed the idea of a rockabilly number sung by an African American had tantalizing potential. They changed the name to Maybellene and it became a crossover hit among the first to chart on the R&B, country western and pop charts, helping to usher in the phenomenon of rock 'n' roll. Small horizontal tear at bottom left, age at edges, corner and scattered ink marks that occurred in production. VF. While there are rarer Chuck Berry posters given the history and the eye-popping design this one gets our vote for most outstanding- if you had to have only one representative Berry poster this is it.
