Item Description
Pair of 8.5x11" typed letters addressed to same individual - Buck Rogers of Detroit, MI. Both deal w/Rogers's request for use of the Buck Rogers name commercially. First letter is dated Dec. 16, 1953 and on "Calkins Ranch" letterhead. Letter is from comic strip artist Dick Calkins (1894-1962) the first artist to draw the Buck Rogers comic strip. Letter responds to request, stating Calkins hasn't had anything to do w/Buck Rogers for some time and grants usage but urges Rogers to contact John F. Dille of the National Newspaper Service for permission. Letter has been signed in red grease pencil and Calkins has added a large profile sketch, labeling it as "Original Buck Rogers." Second letter is dated Jan. 8, 1954 and is on "National Newspaper Service" letterhead. Letter is from businessman Dille, who specialized in syndication of comic strips in newspapers. Dille's letter responds in the negative concerning Buck Rogers's use of the Buck Rogers name. Letter has been signed in blue ink. Both letters are folded as mailed, w/even lt. aging. Exc. Very interesting and unique pair. Gene Seger Buck Rogers Collection.
