Item Description
12.5x17" artboard has pen and ink original art for Pizzazz #5, published by Marvel Feb. 1978. Pizzazz was a magazine published by Marvel 1977-1979, for a total of 16 issues. Aimed at youth culture, Pizzazz mostly contained articles about popular movies, rock stars, as well as comic strips and puzzles. Offered here is the pen and ink original art for a Star Wars story published in issue #5 by Howard Chaykin w/inks by Tony DeZuniga (1932-2012). Entitled "The Keeper's World," this story was the first story set outside the scope of the original films, a series of stories known as the "Expanded Universe" by Star Wars fans. Serialized in the first nine issues of Pizzazz, the first installment of this story was cover-dated Oct. 1977 but was released in Sept. 1977, giving "The Keeper's World" the distinction of being the first original story (pre-dating the first non-film story published in the Marvel Star Wars comic book series) published anywhere. Featuring six panels, Chaykin's art shows Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO and R2-D2 being chased through jungle by Imperial forces, ultimately seeking refuge in a seemingly abandoned ruin. Last panel has screentone accent. Top margin has inked "Pizzazz" title and month of publication as well as penciled "Chase Thru Jungle" title, page number and Chaykin's name. Printer job stamp at lower margin w/some handwritten printer notations. Pin holes at top corners and top margin has some scattered age spotting. Artboard has some handling wear but are remains clean and displays Exc. overall. Rare and early Star Wars comic art. Fresh to market, this piece (and other Star Wars original art offered in this auction) comes from one collector, and each is an incredible find.
