Item Description
In 1996, a line of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys were released by Playmates Toys, featuring a stretching design similar to that of the classic Stretch Armstrong toy of the 1970s. Each Turtle received a figure and each was packaged on the same card design. Offered here is the mixed media original art by illustrator Dirk J. Wunderlich on 14x20" artboard mounted to a heavier illustration board. Art is for an alternate take on the front of card design, featuring a large image of Raphael stretching an arm and leg to incredible lengths, w/Shredder attempting to hold his leg as his hands grasp sewer pipe at top. Much smaller images of Michaelangelo and Donatello appear in bkg. This design made it as far as printer's proofs (see following lot) before the overall design was changed, keeping Shredder while removing the other Turtles and changing bkg. as well as slight modifications to Raphael's face and hands (which no longer grasp pipe, instead one is a large fist and the other holds one of Raphael's signature sai weapons) as well as his belt. Wunderlich has signed in black ink at bottom margin, adding "1995" date. Artboard has black paper overlay w/artist's professional label attached. Art is clean and Exc. All Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pre-production art is rare, w/the majority of that available being alternate art.
