Item Description
Created and signed by Dr. Julian Wolff. 14.5x17.25" overall. Mounted on artboard. ©1940 by Julian Wolff. Map is one of a series created by Wolff of the Sherlockian world. He created, colored and gave them to friends/members of the Baker Street Irregulars. Founded in 1934, the club was created to preserve and enrich with humorous, anecdotal papers, memories and myths of Holmes' presumed life in Victorian London. Wolff was their Commissionaire from 1960 to 1986. He acted as editor of its scholarly quarterly, The Baker Street Journal from 1961 to 1977. The Irregulars take their name from the ragtag fictional band of street urchins who aided the brilliant detective immortalized by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in four novels and 56 short stories from 1887 to 1927. This hand-colored map is signed at the bottom "For Deak Simpson With The Compliments Of The Season/Julian Wolff 20 Dec 1954." A. Carson (Deak) Simpson was a long-time member of the Baker Street Irregulars. The map identifies European countries/cities with special Holmes-related notations where appropriate. Examples include: "Where Holmes Gave Serious Trouble To The Constubulary/Holmes And Watson Landed Here/Holmes Investigated The Trepoff Murders Here/Spot Where Body Was Not Found/Vampires Are Found Here," etc. Very intricate detail is seen on the family shields at bottom/flags of the nations. Heavy crease across map about upper third causing surface paper break. Additional crease upper right-hand corner. Does not detract from this hand-colored/signed, one-of-a-kind item. Displays Fine. Comes with Hake's COA.
