Item Description
14.5x39” overall. 8.5x32.5” image area. Text at bottom reads “’North Side Boosters’ (400 strong)/At Opening Game Federal League/Apr. 17-1915/Pittsburgh Vs. Kansas City.” Wonderful team photo taken at Exposition Park on Pittsburgh’s north side with excited and anxious fans surrounding the team. Banner on grandstands reads “North Side/Chamber of Commerce/Boost The Rebels.” Players are posed in the foreground with one seated on the rail half way back in the crowd. A band appears on right side with large bass drum reading “Marine Band/Pittsburgh, Pa.” Fans are all well-dressed in suits and hats. Of the estimated 400 spectators only two women and one child are seen. One young ambitious vendor carrying basket (likely peanuts) is seen in the stands.Young newsboy/program hawker is seen on right side bleacher steps. With all of the attention focused to the team and surrounding spectators, the large crowd which appears in the bleachers at far right seem to go unnoticed. Since the Federal League folded following the 1915 season (after only 2 years in existence), this would be the last opening day for the “North Side Boosters.” The photo has been dry mounted and has several tears and vertical creases. One 1” wide area at far left has distorted images of the fans, but that must have been from the original negative as the text over this area is not affected. Photo remains glossy and overall VG/Fine. Originally obtained from the Barry Halper Collection auction held by Sotheby’s in Sep. 1999 (where it sold for $2,587) and has their auction sticker affixed to frame at lower left. Professionally framed and double mounted. All Federal League material is very desirable and this is an exceptional piece. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
