Item Description
19x22” frame contains original watercolor art that has been double-matted to 9.5x13.5”. Art by John Held Jr., a famed magazine illustrator of the 1920s, known for defining the Flapper Era. Art depicts baseball game between “American Legion” and unknown team as numerous spectators watch. Numerous dogs also view the game with one being asked to leave at bottom right corner above Held’s signature. Item was personally owned by the artist Richard Merkin who was a great admirer of Held’s work and this is the best item from the Held portion of Merkin’s collection. Art is c. mid-1920s. 3.75” faint crease at lower left margin but o/w art is lightly aged and displays Exc. Second mat has some lt. wear but is vintage and displays well. Purchased by Merkin many years ago for $4,000 as noted by attachment on reverse. Among the best Held originals we have seen offered anywhere. All Held art is highly coveted. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
