Item Description
c. 1920s. 17.5x25” wood frame has double mat with 12-3/8x19-3/8” opening revealing image of Dempsey as a c. 1880s bare knuckle fighter. Art has printed signature “John Helb Jr.” though his name is actually spelled “Held.” Jack Dempsey (1895-1983) held the heavyweight title from 1919 to 1926. John Held Jr. (1889-1958) was a famous cartoonist between 1915 and 1940 doing many covers for “LIFE” when it was a cartoon magazine, Vanity Fair and many others as well as movie ads and other advertisements. Trace of lt. dust soil and lt. foxing. Fine overall but displays Exc. as professionally matted and framed. Wonderful image.
