Item Description
13.75x29" wood frame has archival mat with 9x24" opening revealing wonderful two part India ink art c.1910. 16.75" wide area at left shows large crowd on street, in buildings, and on rooftops waiting to greet NY Yankees. Signs include "Handshaking Squad, We Think The Yanks Can Beat The Giants Brigade, Knew Him Since He Was A Boy Brigade, Relatives And Very Distant Relations Squad, Lady Fans With Summer Scenery, Brooklyn Fans With Plants For Keeler", and "Baseball Reporters With The Slang That Adam Used". Sign on rooftop says “Harry Stevens One Best Bet” and art is autographed at lower right “To Harry Stevens From Tad”. Stevens was a concessionaire and is credited with Tad as coining the term “Hot Dog”. Right side has large panel titled “All Hands to the Pumps” showing Silk Hat Harry and other cartoon dogs manning a pirate ship. Harry is shown swimming under water, just being missed by swordfish. Frame has a few scuffs, image area has a bit of lt. dust soil but overall Exc. appearance. Elaborate, funny and well done. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
