Item Description
©1905 L. Van Oeyen Cleveland, Ohio. 3.25x5.25" shows Lajoie in Cleveland Naps uniform shaking hands with Jeffries who is wearing suit with both smiling at each other as crowd in stands looks on. Right side of front has vertical ink note "Notice Any Resemblance To Cap?" Postcard is postally used with pair of August 1905 postmarks and addressed to recipient in Hyannis, Mass. Light aging with tiny corner crease and faint ink cancellation mark at lower left of front. Fine. Lajoie had his major league debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1896 and moved to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1901 where he had a .426 batting average that year. Lajoie ended his career with the Phila. Athletics in 1916 and his career statistics included a .338 batting average with 3242 hits, 83 home runs, and 1504 runs scored. James Jeffries, whose name is misspelled on this card as "Jefferies" learned how to box under middleweight champion Tommy Ryan and became a professional fighter in 1895. In 1898 he defeated Peter Jackson and in 1899 he defeated Bob Fitzsimmons to win the Heavyweight Championship of the World. He retired in 1905 but made a comeback in 1910 when he fought Jack Johnson, which became known as the "Fight Of The Century". He retired permanently after losing that fight. In his career he had 21 fights with 18 wins, including 14 by knockout, 1 loss and 2 draws. Superb sharp image and an incredible sports crossover item. Rare. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
