Item Description
3 3/8x5.5" with nice photo of Brown in Dominican Republic uniform has Spanish text which translates to “Lions Outfielder Chosen Royal Charter Sports News Week Of 7 Aug. 1952". Unused postcard has crisp clear image. Postcard has lt. curl and emulsion is a bit yellowed with .5" moisture mark at bottom of reverse. Front is glossy and VF. Brown (1915-1996) numbers among the very few veterans who served in the Negro Leagues, Puerto Rican League and the Major Leagues. He began his professional career in 1934 with the Monroe Monarchs and joined the Kansas City Monarchs in 1936 until he went into the service in WWII. He hit more home runs than Josh Gibson who gave him his nickname “ Home Run”. He had a batting average of .374 in 1948 and regularly batted over .350. He played briefly for the St. Louis Browns in the major leagues in 1947 but only batted .179 in 21 games. He became the first black player to hit a home run in the American League. That winter he went to Puerto Rico and batted .432 with 27 home runs and 86 RBI’s in just 60 games and won the Triple Crown. He also won the Puerto Rican Winter League Triple Crown in 1948-1950. He returned to the Monarchs between 1948 and 1950 and then had a successful career as a minor leaguer with the Texas League from 1953-1956. His career batting average was .355.
