2.25x4" with nice photo on front has text on reverse "Harry Coveleskie, The Giant Killer, Showing His Son William How He Held The Ball When He Beat The Giants Out Of The Pennant In 1908" with cafe address of Shamokin, PA. Both men are smiling and holding balls in front of cafe. Windows in background include two paintings of Coveleskie in Phillies uniform and pitching with his name on one window and "The Giant Killer" name on other window. 1930s. Card has some lt. dust soil but overall Fine/VF appearance. Coveleskie (1886-1950) pitched with the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, and Detroit Tigers. He debuted with the Phillies in 1907 in late September when they were in a playoff race against the Giants. In five days Coveleskie beat the Giants three times to earn his nickname. His last major league appearance was with the Detroit Tigers on June 23, 1918. During his career he had a win-loss record of 81-55 with an ERA of 2.39 with 511 strikeouts. He opened his cafe in 1930 but was fined for serving alcohol in violation of the prohibition laws. To pay off the fine, he took a job as a watchmen in a silk mill, eventually earning enough money to once again open his own place, a tavern he called the Giant Killer.
