Item Description
September 30, 1931 news service photo is 8.25x10" glossy showing Alexander with 11 member team in uniform standing in line next to him. Text caption on back has title "Old Pete" and "Comes Back To The Scene Of His Former Triumphs" with text mentioning "Grover Cleveland Alexander, Hero Of The St. Louis Card's Victory In Their First World Series In 1926, Has Returned To St. Louis, But In A New Role As Manager Of The House Of David Baseball Team." Photo has some rippling from applied text label on back. Bottom corner tip is missing 3/8" piece in blank area. VG. Real photo postcard is 3.5x5.5" titled "Grover Alexander & House Of David Ball Players In Donkey Game" showing him standing next to three bearded players in uniform sitting atop donkeys. Reverse side has printed Eden Spring House of David address in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Photo has lt. curl, otherwise unused and VF. Third item is 3-3/8x5.5" postcard with nice photo of Alexander wearing "House Of David Uniform" holding ball and glove. Trace of lt. dust soil, otherwise unused and VF. Grover Alexander (1887-1950) had his major league debut in 1911 with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played with the Chicago Cubs from 1918 to 1926, the St. Louis Cardinals from 1926 to 1929, and the Philadelphia Phillies in 1930. His pitching career included 373 wins with a 2.56 ERA and pitched 90 shutouts. He won the National League Pitcher's Triple Crown in 1915, 1916, 1920 and was World Series champion in 1926. His 373 wins are tied with Christy Mathewson for most wins. He was House of David manager for four years in the early 1930s. Interesting group.
