Item Description
Two items. c. 1890. 21x27" wood frame has archival mat with 16.25x21" opening revealing wonderful stiff paper sign for the "Nelson Morris & Co. Packers And Lard Refiners. Chicago, Ill." Product name is on flag flying above spectators at baseball park which has game going on between pink pigs and black pigs who are using tin bail handled lard bucket as ball with well-dressed spectator pigs in the stands. Other pigs are in trees behind the stand to get a free look at game. Action on field shows pink pig trying to catch the can as black pig slides into first and pig at first runs to second. Score adds up to 31 for "Supreme" team and 0 for competitors. The number 31 no doubt represents the number of years company was in business at that point in time. The sign has been trimmed at some point but appears to be no more than .25" from any one side. Right side and top margin edges have a few moisture marks with very faint vertical moisture mark just to left of center of image area. Very slight color fade. Fine/VF appearance and ready for display. Comes with matching 3-3/8x6" trade card which is exactly the same except for words "Lily Leaf/White Leaf/Kettle Rendered" added to text on building at right bkg. which has pigs watching from window. Reverse side of card has price list along with company name. Lower right corner of front has a few specks of missing color and reverse side has bit of missing text from removal from scrapbook. Front has Fine appearance with bright color. The company was founded in 1859 and a number 31 would equal the date of 1890. The company merged with Armour in 1923. Nice to have both items together. Wonderful concept and graphics. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
