Item Description
16.25x33" wood frame has archival mat with 10.75x28" opening revealing wonderful India ink original art by Robert Edgren, cartoonist for the New York Evening World newspaper. Series was between the New York Giants and the Philadelphia Athletics and is dated in ink for actual first day of first game "To My Friend Harry Stevens R. Edgren Philadelphia - Oct. 9, 1905". Just above is image of Stevens wearing bowler hat, smoking cigar and running with fists full of money with caption "Harry Stevens Broke Up All The Piker Betting In Philadelphia". Stevens was a concessionaire and is credited with cartoonist Tad as coining the term "Hotdog". Other images include catcher Bresnahan trying to stop pitch by Christy Mathewson with his face mask and getting face dented, "John McGraw, And The Hat He Promised To Wear Until The Giants Beat The Athletics", outfielder Lord almost making a great catch, crowd rushing to see Giants band, and Philadelphia fan in stands going from being excited to disappointed. Frame has lt. wear around edges, art board has some age tanning and is a bit darker in center and at right side. Fine appearance. Cartoonist Edgren was an athlete himself who competed in the 1906 Olympics in the discus and shot put competition. Well drawn and historic for first game of 1905 World Series which the Giants won. Ready for display. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
