Item Description
3.5x5.5" with superb image showing Dihigo in Veracruz Aguilas uniform on mound about to pitch. Bottom third of image has fountain pen inscription in Spanish signed and dated 1941. Postcard is printed by Kodak Mexicana, Ltd. Address portion is addressed to Dihigo in ink with the name of his ball club. Card has some lt. creasing and dust soil, emulsion has yellowed a bit and autograph is a bit light in a few places including his last name. Still VG. Dihigo (1906-1971) excelled as a pitcher and second baseman. He began his professional career in the winter of 1922/23 at the age of 16 and had his first summer in US baseball in 1923 as a first baseman for the Negro League's Cuban Stars (East). He played in the Negro Leagues from 1923 through 1936 and again briefly in 1945. Over the course of his career he played all nine positions. He lead the Negro Leagues in home runs in 1926 and 1935. Buck Leonard said of Dihigo "He Was The Greatest All-Around Player I Know. I Say He Was The Best Player Of All Time, Black Or White. He Could Do It All". The only player elected to Cuban, Mexican and American Hall of Fames. A very rare signature. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
