Item Description
8x10" gloss news service photo date stamped on back March 9, 1946 shows six players in uniform on field with three kneeling and three standing. Five players have signed in ink including Chuck Connors, Jack Robinson, Sal Recca, Frank Makosky, and Al Clark. Van Grafski is also in the photo, shown kneeling at left, but he did not sign the photo. Reverse side has photographer’s pencil notes including “Jersey Delegation Connors-Jersian By Courtesy Of Seton Hall”. Photo has lt. handling creases with a few lt. impressions on front from writing on back, though mostly just visible in reflected light. Tiny tear top left. Fine with bold signatures. The team was a minor league affiliate of the Brooklyn Dodgers between 1944 and 1955, playing in the Piedmont league, and based in Newport News, Va. They won the Piedmont championship in 1946, 1948 and 1954. Chuck Connors (1921-1992) was best known for his 40 year film career including the 1960s Western series The Rifleman. He played baseball after leaving the service in 1946 with minor league teams before joining the Dodgers in 1949 for whom he only played one game. Pitcher Frank Makosky played for the New York Yankees in 1937. Pitcher Jack Robinson played with the Boston Red Sox in 1949. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA and JSA LOA.
