Item Description
2x3.25" candy card from the set of 142 featuring players from the Pacific Coast League. Superb photo front, blank back. The 1916 series is among the more difficult to obtain PCL issues. This is by far the key card of the set and one of the most sought after and highly prized of all Zeenut PCL cards. This card is historically significant as it is the very first American-issued baseball card to feature a black baseball player. Canadian born Claxton was of African American and Native American descent. Claxton temporarily broke the professional baseball color line when he played just two games for the Oakland Oaks. When word of his ancestry got out, complaints from many resulted in his swift departure from the team. However brief, he was in the right place at the right time and Zeenut produced this legendary card of him. In 2011 a lower grade example, SGC 20 Fair 1.5, sold at auction for $5,581. This higher grade example is a must have for the serious baseball historian and card collector. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
