Item Description
8x10" glossy news service photo shows Waitkus in civilian clothes in locker room holding bat with Philadelphia Phillies players and teammates nearby. Reverse side has UPI ink stamp and paper caption dated 1949. Caption includes text "Eddie Waitkus Convalescing After Being Shot By A Girl, Fondles A Bat In The Clubhouse At Shibe Park, During A Visit With Teammates July 23." Caption names players Stan Lopata and Russ Meyer. Photo has trace of lt. aging, paper caption on back is missing .75" piece in center. Photo is Fine. Waitkus played first base in the majors for eleven seasons between 1941 and 1955 with the Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles and was on the NL All-Star team in 1948 and 1949. He was shot in the chest by an obsessed fan on June 14, 1949 and was named the Associated Press Come Back Player of the year in 1950. His story became part of author Bernard Malamud's novel "The Natural" in 1952. The book became a feature film starring Robert Redford in 1984. Interesting image. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
