Item Description
1-5/8x2-3/8" Cuban card from set distributed in packs of Diaz cigarettes. The cards in this set feature players from the 1923-1924 Cuban Professional League. 85 cards are in the set, the largest and one of the scarcest of all 1920s Cuban card issues. Printed in dark brown w/photo on front along w/team, player name and position "Santa Clara B.B.C. Charleston-Outfielder." Card back includes number and description of the series w/offer for an album. Slight margin trim but both sides of card remain clean and image is very bold. Along with Pop Lloyd, the key card in the set and highly sought after. Charleston was a Negro League star who played in the Cuban League for seven seasons between 1920-1930. He had a career batting average of .360, an all-time Cuban League high. A multi-talented star, he was renowned by those who saw him play as the finest all-around player in Negro League history. Inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 1976. Designated by SGC as being from the "Richard Merkin Collection" and comes with Hake's COA.
