Item Description
7-5/8x9.75" original glossy photo has wonderful image of Lajoie wearing Cleveland Naps uniform and heavy coat seated on a chair and holding two lion cubs on his lap. Reverse side has “L. Van Oeyen Photographer” ink stamp with pencil caption “Napoleon Lajoie With Lion Cubs Macon, Ga. 1907." Photographer Louis Van Oeyen (1865-1946) was the first newspaper staff photographer in Cleveland. The noted photographer covered politics, disaster, crime, scandal and sports but his greatest love was baseball. He was named the official photographer of the American League of Professional Baseball in 1908, and then for the World Series until 1922. Second baseman Lajoie is considered one of the greatest players of the early 20th Century American League. He played for the Naps between 1902 and 1914 and managed them from 1905 to 1909. He was inducted into the HOF in 1937. Photo has a few lt. handling creases just visible in reflected light. Glossy and Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
