Item Description
Lot of two items from the estate of George Kelly. Plate is 10" diameter high quality porcelain w/hand painted art image of Mount Fuji surrounded by fog and foliage. Hand done text across the front reads "Step Right Up To The Old Home Plate. Kelly's At Millbrae 1931." This text was done after Kelly returned home from the tour. Plate was made by the Noritake Co. of Nagoya, Japan and has company logo on back including text “Nippon Toki Kaisha”. Exc. In 1931 after the season ended, 14 players toured Japan matching up against local teams and winning all their games. The team was co-managed by Herb Hunter and sports writer Fred Lieb and the roster included Lou Gehrig, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, Frank Frisch and Rabbit Maranville in addition to George. Second item is an original 8x10" glossy NSP w/full figure image of George in Reds uniform and holding a bat. Front is signed in blue ink twice- bottom left w/date of 1931 added and again at bottom right. Reverse has publication notations including ink stamp of "Credit Evening Post Photo" as well as "Kelly Estate" ink stamp. Lt. handling wear but glossy and Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA and JSA COA.
