Item Description
Original high quality gelatin silver photo is 7.75x9.75" on textured and embossed cardboard mount as issued. Original owner has inked on the bottom margin "Hazleton Base Ball Club vs Walter Johnson's All Stars October 13, 1924." Photo shows both teams lined up on a ball field w/crowd of spectators in the bkg. Original owner has also added in ink the player and manager names below images (although Gehrig's name is under the wrong player). These are small and faint and in no way impact the image. Player images are crisp and sharp. This includes Gehrig who is shown in his New York Yankees uniform and Walter Johnson in his Washington Senators uniform. 11 players for this team are shown in total and also include Nick Altrock, Steve O'Neill, Bob Ehmke and Joe Bush. 13 players are shown for the Hazleton team. This is an early and historic piece for Gehrig. He joined the Yankees midway through the 1923 season and only saw limited action during his first two seasons with the team, playing in a total of just 23 games. In 1925 he became a major presence in the Yankees lineup and played in 126 games. What followed is one of the greatest careers in baseball but in this photo we see a young Gehrig who could only dream of what was to come. Trace of aging to border of mount. Photo has a few tiny edge nicks but remains clean and glossy. VF. Professionally framed and matted utilizing a quality wood frame decorated w/repeated small American flag images. Nicely done and ready for display. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
