Item Description
Lot of two unique pieces for Eligio Sardinas, better known by his fighting name - Kid Chocolate. After the death of Cuban boxer Joe Marroquin in a boxing match, the mayor of Havana banned boxing in the city; but a year later, boxing was once again allowed w/the Interior Ministry proposing to regulate all matters relating to the practice of boxing and wrestling in Cuba. On Dec. 13, 1921 the National Boxing and Wrestling Commission was created. Prestigious figures of the time, including boxers and recognized boxing fans were chosen to become members of the institution. This included Kid Chocolate. First item being offered here is Kid Chocolate's Cuban National Boxing and Wrestling Commission identity card, which is a 3x4.75" folder w/a 1.5x1.75" identification photo, two inked fingerprints and official Commission stamp. Dated Feb. 29, 1928 in ink. Kid Chocolate has signed his name above "Professional Boxer" Spanish designation. This identity card notes Kid Chocolate by his given name as well as noting "Chocolate" fighting name. Card number has been hand-inked "90." Moderate wear w/aged cellophane tape repair to inside spine (w/staining to surface paper) and top and bottom of exterior spine. Edge wear and aging. VG overall. Second item is Sardinas' 2.75x4.25" Puerto Rico identity card/folder which has stamped June 30, 1941 date and typed "Sport" line noting him as a boxer and his "Condition" is noted as amateur, given he had retired from professional boxing in 1938. Scattered wear/aging w/some moisture staining to cover. VG. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
