Item numbers 1 through 1007 in auction 214
Item Description
Original 8x10" glossy photo showing four players in uniforms standing posed and full figure. Lower right margin has photographers embossed stamp "Foto Aybar." Players from left to right are: Satchel Paige, Robert Griffith, Rodolfo Fernandez, Leroy Matlock. This team was organized by dictator Rafael Trujillo who dedicated the 1937 Dominican Baseball League season to his re-election with two rival teams from Santo Domingo merging together for 1937 only. They raided the Negro Leagues to ensure victory and this team won the championship series with the Aguilas. After the season the league collapsed and the Negro Leaguers returned to the US and Trujillo was ousted. Photos has noticeable wear inlcuding creases (mostly at lower left), left margin also has a pinhole, 1/8" hole and .25" tear, all to the left of (and not affecting) Satchel's image. Top right corner has small surface paper lift. Photo has been mounted to a thick sheet of cardboard for reinforcement. Photo does remain glossy and image is sharp and clear. Good. In our Nov. 2011 auction we offered a full team photo (from the Merkin Collection) for this legendary team, also w/a "Foto Aybar" stamp and it sold for $31,625. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
