Item Description
Original 3.5x10.5" manila mailing envelope w/"Badges - Buttons - Emblems - Medals - Pennants - Trophies - Prize Cups" maker James Spencer & Company return address. Envelope shows scattered handling wear but is o/w unused. Fine/VF. Envelope contains elaborate double-sided ribbon badge that measures 7.75" tall (to ends of metallic braid tassels at bottom). Ribbon has 1.75" dia. celluloid-covered pendant w/pair of men's hands clasped in handshake and "Organized - July 6th, 1896" text. This is attached to secondary ribbon w/embroidered crossed American flags suspended from "Member" celluloid-covered metal hanger. Main ribbon front has "Morton Colored Republican Club - Morton, PA." text w/reverse having "In Memoriam - Morton Colored Republican Club - Morton, PA." text. Ribbon has some lt. even aging and text on reverse shows some lt. wear. Exc. overall. The Morton Colored Republican Club once served as a political campaign stop for candidates hoping to garner the votes of influential black voters and later changed its focus and became more of a social club and an entertainment venue visited by the likes of Ike and Tina Turner, Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin.
