Item Description
Pair, both from 1952. Photo is an original 8x10" glossy for the Cuban League. Shows six players at an awards ceremony holding trophies and an oversized certificate which bears Minoso's name. Minnie is at center holding a small trophy w/baseball player on top. Other players include HOFer Ray Dandridge, Ray Noble (Negro & Major League player), Silvio Garcia (who also played in the Negro Leagues), Fermin "Mike" Guerra (who also played in the Major Leagues), and Lorenzo “Chiquitin” Cabrera. The latter three are in the Cuban Baseball HOF. Reverse has penciled names and some surface paper remnants on margins as once scrapbook mounted. Handling wear much of which is only visible in reflected light. One tiny insect hole at lower right. Image remains clean and sharp. Fine. Second item is 8.5x11" "Certificate Of Award" on parchment paper. Issued to Minoso by the "Chicago Defender" newspaper. Dated May 10th, 1952 and signed in ink by noted African-American newspaper publisher John Sengstacke. Certificate states Minoso's placement in its "Honor Roll Of Democracy." This was during his first stint w/the Chicago White Sox. Makes for a nice pairing w/the photo of him receiving another award. Certificate has noticeably browned w/age and has some margin wear. Still VG and unique. Richard Merkin Collection and comes w/Hake's COA.
