Item Description
11x30" thin artboard strip with 5 panels of original pen and ink art by Mutt & Jeff creator Bud Fisher. Mutt & Jeff are each depicted in 4 panels, Jeff in all 5. Strip deals with Mutt & Jeff running for president, seeing campaign buttons with their portraits on passerbys. They decide to see who is the more popular candidate based on how many buttons they see. Second and third panel show men walking by with Jeff buttons, 4th panel shows stereotypical Chinaman wearing Mutt button, which Jeff finds humorous. Strip ends with Jeff on the ground, stars over his head, his hat broken over his head by Mutt and text "For A Guy Who Aspires To Become President I'll Say Your Conduct Is Very Passé!" Last panel is signed by Fisher. Pen and ink. Fourth panel has 1923 H.C. Fisher copyright paste-over. Margin above strip art has pencil notation reading "Mutt & Jeff - The Mutt & Jeff Campaign Buttons Are More Or Less In Evidence. Looks Like Mutt Has Chinese Vote Served Up - But They Can't Vote In The U.S." By Bud Fisher. This text is in Fisher's hand. Notation at bottom indicates strip ran Dec. 17, 1923. Scattered aging/dust soiling along margins. Art is for the most part unaffected. 1.5" tear along bottom margin. If matted and framed, art would display VF/Exc. A wonderful Mutt & Jeff daily strip with biting political satire.
