Item Description
c. 1940. 11x14" matte finish photo shows cartoonist Harry Hershfield at left with Benny Leonard in center and Mickey Walker at right with Judge Jonah Goldstein standing behind them in restaurant setting. Top portion has 4.25x10" hand drawn India ink image area with Herschfield's comic strip character Abie smoking a cigarette and holding a drink in the air saying "Mickey Boy - The Fight Records Have You Down In Alphabetical Order, In "W" - But To Me You'll Always Be "A" One With Plenty Of My Heart For You - Hershfield". Walker became the World's Welterweight Champion in 1922 and became the World's Middleweight Champion in 1926. He opened a restaurant when he retired in 1935 and this photo was likely taken there. Benny Leonard had 101 fights with 91 wins, 5 loses and 1 draw. He was Lightweight Champion and retired from boxing in 1924 undefeated but came back in 1931 and finally ended his career in 1932 when he was beaten by future champion Jimmy McLarnin. Harry Hershfield created Abie the Agent, aka Abraham Kabibble, America's first Jewish comic strip for William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal with first appearance on Feb. 2, 1914. It ran until 1940. Judge Goldstein was elected judge of the New York County Court of General Sessions in 1939 and stayed there until he retired in 1956. Photo is curled at top and has some lt. dust soil and a few handling creases, lower left side has 3/8" tear and bottom edge has .25x.25" moisture mark. Top edge has some creasing and dust soil. VG overall. This photo likely was on display in Mickey Walker's restaurant. Large and impressive. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
