Item Description
7.25x9.5" glossy showing Marquez closeup in uniform with "Best Wishes" ballpoint pen inscription and signature at lower left. Reverse side is dated Nov. 16, 1950 and Aug. 5, 1956 and has attached newspaper clipping from 1956 noting Marquez got the most votes of all Pacific Coast League Northern Division All-Stars to play in a pennant race. Reverse also has ink note "Please Sign Front." Photo has some minor spider-webbing to photo emulsion and face and hat area are traced with blank lines for reproduction in newspaper as made. Most are just visible in reflected light. Overall glossy and VG. The Beavers hired Marquez in 1949, making the Beavers the first team to sign a Latino player. Marquez led the Negro National League in batting in 1947 and would go on to play a total of 68 games in the Major Leagues with the Boston Braves, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA and JSA COA.
