Item Description
4x6" matte finish photo shows Lopez standing holding catcher's mitt with Van Lingle Mungo next to him with his arm around Lopez. c. early 1930s. Bottom left has bold felt tip pen signature "Al Lopez." Reverse side has ink stamp of photographer Geo. Burke with Chicago address. Tiny corner tip wear, otherwise Exc. Lopez began his professional career with the Dodgers in 1928 and became their starting catcher in 1930. He played with them until 1935, then went on to the Boston Bees 1936-1940, Pittsburgh Pirates 1940-1946 and the Cleveland Indians in 1947. He went on to manage the Cleveland Indians between 1951 and 1956 and the Chicago White Sox in the late 1950s until the late 1960s. He had a batting average of .261 including 1,547 hits and 652 RBIs and was inducted into the Baseball HOF in 1977. Pitcher and friend Mungo played on the same team with Lopez between 1931 and 1935. Very early signature of Lopez. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA and JSA COA.
