Item Description
Original 4.25x5.5 high quality silver gelatin portrait head shot of Ray posed in a suit and tie. Reverse has ink stamp address for Santa Clara, Cuba photography studio "Yris." Reverse signed and inscribed by Ray in ink diagonally at top right. Inscription includes "Bueno Amigo" and Brown has added a date of 2/19/37. Brown played for the Santa Clara Leopards from 1936-1939. Photo has a very slight margin trim that partially removes some of inscription (a bit of this is also missing due to some surface paper loss) and his signature is also missing a bit of the "N" in "Brown" due to trim. However, signature otherwise remains bold. Reverse has some other marks and aging but again, not affecting the signature. There is a .5" sliver missing from the top left margin. Lower right margin area has some emulsion issues. Faint 1.5" crease just to the left of his head. Despite these issues the image remains bold and sharp. VG. Brown spent most of his years in the Negro League playing for Cum Posey's Homestead Grays and even married Posey's daughter Ethel. He also spent many seasons playing baseball in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Cuba. He was inducted into the National Baseball HOF in 2006. His signature is extremely rare w/only a few known examples in total and only one other of those being a signed photo. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
